About Hillend Loch

A large historic reservoir near Caldercruix, managed by Airdrie & District Angling Club since 1949.

Location

Hillend Loch lies just east of Caldercruix in North Lanarkshire. It covers about 345 acres (140 ha) and sits around 650 feet above sea level.

Fishing

The loch is stocked through the season with Rainbow, Brown and Blue trout and offers fishing from both shore and boat.

Wildlife

Woodland, meadow, peat bog, reed beds and moorland support a wide variety of birds and mammals, including osprey, grebes, roe deer and otter.

History

The reservoir was constructed between 1797 and 1799 by damming the North Calder Water and historically supplied water to the canal system.

Walking & cycling

Hillend Loch forms part of the Hillend Loch Railway Path, providing recreational walking and cycling alongside the water.

Since 1949

The club has managed fishing here for more than 70 years and attracts anglers from across Scotland.
